Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a medical procedure used to treat glaucoma, a condition characterized by increased pressure within the eye that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. SLT works by using a specialized laser to target specific cells within the eye’s drainage system, called the trabecular meshwork, which helps regulate the flow of fluid out of the eye.

The laser used in SLT delivers a series of low-energy pulses to the trabecular meshwork, which selectively targets pigmented cells in the area. These cells absorb the laser energy and undergo a process called photodisruption, which stimulates the body’s natural healing response. This leads to increased drainage of the fluid out of the eye, thereby reducing the pressure within the eye.

Additionally, the laser energy also triggers a cellular response that leads to the production of cytokines and growth factors that promote the survival and function of the trabecular meshwork cells. This helps to maintain the improved drainage and lower eye pressure over time.

SLT is a relatively quick and non-invasive procedure that can be performed in an outpatient setting. The effects of SLT are typically seen within a few weeks of the procedure and can last for several years. It is considered to be a safe and effective treatment option for managing glaucoma, either as a standalone therapy or in combination with other treatments.
